With all that went on this week, something other than an F-35 nearly slipped past the radar.

My book and eBook '50 Tales of Flight' - From Biplanes to Boeings, marked its fourth anniversary of publication. In that time the cover has changed and the content refined as I learned more about the writing process. So much has happened and so much has been written since, but I am still proud of that book as it marked so many 'firsts' for me personally. It still receives wonderful reviews and seems to be appreciated right around the world.

To everyone that has read and enjoyed '50 Tales of Flight', thanks so much for your support.

Gloster Meteor Halestorm 

 

It's been a whirlwind week.

 

Those that follow me around the social media traps will be aware that i have been at the Australian International Airshow at Avalon. News coverage was focused on the appearance of the RAAF's new F-35A Lightning II and all manner of air power - new and old - that was on display. Intertwined were numerous civil types on the ground and in the air as well as a twilight air display that took one's breath away.

 

Personally, I was fortunate to sit in a Gloster Meteor F8 like my father flew in Korea and 'fly' the F-35 simulator. A past flying student, now in the RAAF, gave me an up close and very personal look at a RAAF Roulette PC-9. Still, for all of the aircraft on display and these special, there was another aspect of the week that captured my attention. The people.

 

Catching up with those that I taught to fly many years ago and seeing what they have achieved was one of the most rewarding feelings that a flight instructor can have. Chatting with the proud young lads and lasses of the Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) whose enthusiasm was infectious and whose dreams were enviable. Meeting Defence personnel across all services and all ranks who not only do such a tremendous service today, but seem very aware of their proud history. And you - the readers of my posts, books and blogs.

 

Without people the most amazing aircraft are a testament to engineering prowess, but it is the people that truly bring them to life. To those that came and said 'Hi' and to those who sent so many wonderful messages - thank you. You make it all worthwhile.

 

Yes, it was a whirlwind week.
